Chapter Seven

When he was little, Liam wished to be an only child. A selfish little boy, he’d hated the idea there was another kid who looked just like him. It was like looking in a mirror, and the prospect scared the hell out of him when he was a kid. Oh, there were differences, but they were behavioral.

Not that he didn’t like Sam. In fact, sometimes it was cool to play tricks on their teachers and the other kids in town. He’d lost count of how many times they’d swapped places at school. In their wisdom, the teachers put them in separate classes so as not to get them confused, but they never counted on the boys playing swapsies.

One time, Liam confused Sam’s teacher so much she took both boys to the principal’s office and insisted they own up to their game. They never did. Liam grinned at the happy memory.

Of course, looking alike had a downside. Like the time Sam stole the lolly jar from the local store and blamed it on Liam. He copped a hiding for that. And the time Mary-Beth Parker slapped his cheek because, she said, he peeked under her dress. Yeah, that wasn’t him, either.

On the bus, Sam would constantly move seats to freak out the driver, even though the rules were to sit still and not move. Forty-five minutes of watching one of the twins move about infuriated the driver, who then made Liam sit in the front seat because Sam cried it wasn’t him.

The things he endured being one half of the Knox twins.

The thing that angered Liam the most, was not having a birthday to himself. Oh, it was fun to see who got what. Until they started asking for bigger presents and then had to share one between two. He’d still swear black and blue Sam nicked a few Christmas presents early and then claimed Liam did it.

But his tenth birthday, Liam stopped wishing. That’s when his life was turned upside down. Their parents divorced, and in punishing each other, split the boys up, too. Sam went with their dad to Melbourne, while Liam stayed with their mum on the farm. Loneliness didn’t begin to describe the gaping hole in his life. Suddenly alone, Liam found life rather boring.

At sixteen, things grew hairy again when Sam and their dad came to visit. Liam had his brother back, but things didn’t go according to plan.

“Oh, get a grip,” he growled, swiping at his wet cheeks. He could hardly see the road for the veil of stupid tears.

From the highway, he took a narrow, rutted road into the hills. After an hour of driving, he was almost there. Greta would be surprised to see him, especially after some of the things he said the day he walked out. But when no one answered his call, he’d been left with no alternative than to drive out in person.

He’d sworn black and blue at eighteen that he would never come back. Morgantown held too many terrible memories, but most of all, it was too small for the big dreams of a little boy.
